Why Sanju Samson Was Not Picked for India’s Zimbabwe T20I Series

Sanju Samson

India’s announcement of its T20I squad to play Zimbabwe down there over three matches has generated chatter thanks to snubbing star wicketkeeper-batter Sanju Samson despite strong performances from the batter of late. The announcement did not state a reason for his absence, but it is understood the decision was taken on squad planning, rather than form or fitness.

Sources close to the selection process say that Ajit Agarkar and his panel considered the upcoming Zimbabwe tour as an ideal platform for youngsters. Goalkeeper-batsman Jaiswal has been among the Indian selection committee’s long-term vision, though Samson is already seen as a focal point of India’s plans for the Asian Games in 2026.

Punjab Kings opener Prabhsimran Singh made the cut following consistent performances in domestic T20 cricket and the Indian Premier League for the last two seasons. His recent run for India A also aided his cause. He is the second wicketkeeper in their squad for the Zimbabwe series alongside Ishan Kishan.

Shreyas Iyer has been dropped as well, but Samson’s exclusion from the 15-man group has surprised many considering he had an excellent T20 World Cup, where he ended up being one of the top run-getters and played a significant role in India winning the title. In IPL 2026, he was the top run-scorer for Chennai Super Kings with two centuries.

However, Samson’s poor run in India’s recent white-ball tour of England where he notched low scores before being dropped from the playing XI has been cited by some media as a reason for his omission from the Zimbabwe squad.

From the looks of it, the selectors are seemingly adopting a larger premise — to give opportunities to younger players in less taxing bilateral series while preserving experienced cricketers for bigger assignments later this year. This was done earlier as well, when post-World Cup changes were made to India’s T20 leadership and squad composition.

Later this month, India will play three T20 Internationals against Zimbabwe in Harare. The series will have a few fresh faces keen to make an impression before what is expected to be a busy international calendar. Former India captain VVS Laxman is expected to be in charge of the side as head coach for the tour while the regular coaching amenities are busy preparing for India’s Tests and white-ball assignments later on next month.
